Since July 30th, Brazilian passports requested at consulates in the United States are no longer issued immediately. The document is now produced by the Brazilian Mint and then sent to the consular post, which delivers it by mail or schedules a pickup. The Consulate General in New York reports a timeframe of up to 60 days; the one in Atlanta mentions up to eight weeks.

The change affects 11 Brazilian posts in the United States and also applies to consulates and embassies in other countries. For those with scheduled trips, purchased tickets, or immigration processes requiring valid documentation, the timeframe calculation has changed significantly.

What changed on July 30th?

Previously, the consulate printed the passport booklet on-site, and many applicants left with their passports in hand. Now, printing has been centralized at the Brazilian Mint, and the completed document is returned to the consulate before finally reaching the citizen.

In-person service remains the same: the applicant schedules an appointment through the e-Consular system, goes to the office, submits the documentation, and has their biometric data collected. What has changed is the final step—the physical production and delivery.

Eleven locations in the United States under the new model.

The new protocol is already in effect for consulates in Miami, Orlando, New York, Boston, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, Hartford, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington. Outside the United States, the consulates general in Lisbon, Porto, Frankfurt, and Mexico City, as well as the embassies in Accra and Doha, have also been included.

Since Brazilians in Colorado and Washington state rely on the American consular network to renew their documents, the change affects the entire community, regardless of which consular post serves each address.

How long is it taking?

The published deadlines vary from office to office. New York now reports up to 60 days, starting from the in-person appointment or, in the case of applications submitted by mail, from the receipt of documentation and payment of the fee. Atlanta reports up to eight weeks.

There is no single announced timeframe for the entire network, which makes it necessary to ask the responsible post for an estimate at the time of scheduling and to keep the application number to track its progress through e-Consular.

Why did the line get shorter?

The pressure on the service comes from volume. Almost 189,000 passports were issued at Brazilian consulates and embassies worldwide in the first half of 2026 alone, according to a survey published by the Brazilian Times on August 1st.

Given this volume, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) instructed the network to control the use of the passport booklet stock, and several locations reduced the number of appointment slots available for passport applications. Each consulate determines its own capacity according to the available material. The guidance was presented as temporary, until the stock is replenished.

Itamaraty denies that budget cuts caused the change.

There are two explanations in the air, and they are not identical. Regarding the reduction in appointments, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs cited an increase in demand in recent months that exceeded the estimates used in the budgetary planning of consular services.

Regarding the centralization of printing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Panrotas that the measure responds to the increased demand for passports and is part of a project initiated the previous year, with no risk of service interruption. The ministry denied that budgetary constraints motivated the transfer of production to the Mint.

Urgent cases are given priority.

Even with the reduction in available slots, the offices maintained priority treatment for urgent situations: unavoidable travel, humanitarian issues, and other duly proven circumstances. Proof is part of the request—issued ticket, medical document, or whatever supports the alleged urgency.

Those who have already submitted their application and need to expedite the delivery should deal directly with the responsible consulate, presenting the relevant documentation.

Who has a trip planned?

With expiration dates that can reach up to two months, checking the expiration date is no longer a minor detail. Here are a few things to help avoid problems:

  • Check the expiration date of each family member's passport today, including children, whose passports have a shorter validity period.
  • Starting the renewal process with a much larger margin than usual, considering the estimate provided by the post office.
  • Save the order number and track its status through e-Consular.
  • Ask the consulate when scheduling your appointment whether the delivery will be by mail or in person.

Gazeta News also reported a 50% reduction in passport fees starting June 1, 2026 — a cost change that does not alter the production time.

In Brazil, nothing has changed.

Those applying for passports within Brazil will continue with the usual procedure through the Federal Police. The change applies to applications made through the consular network abroad.
